Definitions  [Back to search]
pH accuracy: The accuracy of the pH reading on a particular electrode
Electrode Configuration: The configuration of the reference and sensing cells. A combination electrode, where the reference and sensing cells are combined in one electrode, is by far the more common configuration. A half cell configuration involves two separate electrodes for the sensing and reference elements.
Reference Options: The ability of the reference of an electrode to be refilled can extend the lifetime of the electrode. However, the sealed electrodes are still much more common.
Electrode Junction Type: The presence of a second junction higher in the electrode significantly decreases contamination and clogging of the reference junction, allowing a longer usable lifetime of the electrode in solutions that have clogging agents. A general rule is to use double junction electrodes any time your pH measurement is not a general purpose use or testing drinking water.
Connection Type: Most meters, especially those sold by Cole-Parmer, have a BNC connector. However, some meters do take a US Standard connection. Check your meter’s specifications to find out which connection you need.
Built-in Temperature Compensation: Many industrial pH meters and controllers allow a connection for the automatic temperature compensation element (ATC). Because of the limited amount of space in many industrial applications, many industrial electrodes have a built-in temperature element on the electrode. For laboratory or field applications, check your meter’s specifications for ATC options
Max Temperature: The maximum temperature that the electrode can withstand without significant damage to the sensing or reference element.
Self-Cleaning: The shape of the electrode is flat on the bottom, allowing it to resist build-up in in-line applications. This feature only really applies to industrial electrodes.
Grounded: The presence of a grounding element that prevents solution ground loops. This feature can often solve jumpy or erratic measurements caused by ground loops.
